Police Assisted Background Research

In this day and age, it is important to know who you are dealing with. Many people, rather you are intending to hire someone for your business, partner with someone in a business dealing, or even rent your home to another person, are turning to background checks to have a better understanding of who the person is and in turn, make a decision as to rather you are willing to put your faith in this person. While you would like to believe that people will always be honest with you, the truth is that some people will choose to put false information on their application, whatever the application is for. They feel that providing that information is in their best interest of moving forward in their goals, but this false information is not in your best interest. Background checks are legal and can be done, but only if done so in an appropriate manner. First of all, you must have permission to check their background. In other words, you should ask on the application, if they have any objections to you verifying their information. If they do have objections, well that should raise a red flag immediately. When asking permission, it is important to explain, in writing, the specifics of what you intend to check, how you will obtain this information, and what this information will do for you in regards to making your final decision. It is also important to understand that you want to keep the background check limited to specifics. In other words, if you are renting to someone, you may want to check their rental history, their employment history and other such details. However, if you were hiring someone in the banking business that will deal with money regularly it may be necessary to check their police background and look into any aspects of theft or burglary. Keeping your background checks limited to specifics based on what job or function the applicant is applying for is mandatory and will prevent a lawsuit in the future. Police background checks are typical for companies in which the employee or tenant will come in contact with valuables or children. Specifically, you will want to check the registered sex offender list if you rent property with children around. Police background checks must be done with a signature and expressed written permission from the applicant. Doing so without the permission of the applicant could result in a lawsuit and other charges being brought against you. A police background check can help you know who you are dealing with from the beginning and can be a great tool for any employer or landlord. |
